From the Pastor...
The Rev. Dr. Hugh A. Mackenzie
Now the Spirit expressly says
that in later times some will depart from the Faith by giving heed to deceitful
spirits and doctrines of demons...
1 Timothy 4:1
Another cultural phenomenon is taking place right along side of Mel Gibsonís "The Passion". It is the run away best seller, "The DaVinci Code". Again, everywhere I go, concerned Christians ask me, "Is it true that Jesus was married? That a committee voted on the Bible? That there were Christians in the early church who had a radically different view of Jesus? That there are other Gospels suppressed by the early Church Fathers?"
I respond by reminding people that the book in question IS A NOVEL. And for my money, a darn good yarn and exciting read. However, like many works of fiction, it plays fast and loose with the historical record. Events and situations are recast and reworked to help the plot along. Many of these theological and archeological issues have been dealt with by the Church Catholic YEARS ago, to the satisfaction of the vast majority of the scholarly community.
Mr. Brown gives short shrift to whole groups of people like the Cathars and Templars and concentrates on other groups or movements whose very existence is in doubt (the Priory of Sion).
The great thing about this cultural event is that PEOPLE ARE TALKING. Talking about things religious and Christian. Talking about the nature of Christ and the formation of the Bible. All of this is very good, as long as sensible Believers apply good doctrine and history to the claims of the story line.
Godís Word AND His Son can stand up to the most intense scrutiny and heresy. The Church thrives when it is challenged and its basic beliefs called into question.
I am thinking about a brief sermon series entitled, "Decoding the DaVinci Code". It will depend on how many people have read it. If I do this series, it will be in May. I think it will be very relevant to what is going in the church and country right now.
COME TO CHURCH AND WORSHIP WITH US. THERE IS NOTHING AS SAD AS A CHRISTIAN WHO CANNOT DEFEND THEIR FAITH.
